Sharon Palmer, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist from California, and I spent time talking about plant-powered diets and their health benefits. This is the first of a series of 4 videos transcribed for my blog. Here we discussed Sharon’s inspiration to write a book called The Plant-Powered Diet: The Lifelong Eating Plan for Achieving Optimal Health, Beginning Today, and why eating more plant foods and cutting down on meats, is beneficial to health. Even small changes will go a long way!
Here is the transcript. To watch the video, scroll to bottom or click here.
Neily: | This is Neily on Nutrition and am with Sharon Palmer, the author of Plant Powered Diet, and a Registered Dietitian. I wanted to talk to Sharon am very glad to have the opportunity to. What was your inspiration in writing the book? |
Sharon: | As a Registered Dietitian and food and nutrition journalist, I’ve been doing a lot of research over many years on food, diet and health. I’ve come to the conclusion that we should all be eating more of a plant-based diet. There are a lot of health benefits associated with it, so I was inspired to write this book. |
Neily: | There are a lot of health benefits. Can you elaborate on what specific health benefits you are talking about? |
Sharon: | Research shows eating more of a whole plant based diet can reduce risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, it can lower inflammation, lower your cholesterol level and even blood pressure. So, those are really important health aspects of eating more plant foods. |
Neily: | Definitely, and in the book you talk about what I really like is the spectrum of vegetarians. I think sometimes people have an “all or nothing” idea that they either are or they aren’t. It’s really important to know that you don’t have to be a vegan, which means no animal products. There are a lot of different levels. |
Sharon: | That’s right. In fact, research shows that if you can make step-wise approaches to the diet the more plant foods you incorporate the more benefits you get. That does not mean you have to do everything exactly, you can make some gradual changes. Just reduce your meat intake a little bit. You can make a health benefit from that. |
Neily: | Good, and we’ll talk more about that in the next video on how people can move to the different levels (of a plant-based diet). |
Sharon: | Okay great! |
Neily | Again, Sharon Palmer author of the Plant Powered Diet, available on Amazon. Thanks for watching Neily on Nutrition, and we will see you in the next video. |
