When people think of health, getting healthy, often diet and exercise come to mind. Health is more than that.
It’s not just what you eat and how much you exercise…
- It’s how you eat, when you eat, with whom you eat, and why you eat.
- It’s about getting adequate sleep and rest.
- It’s about taking care of your body physically through movement.
- It’s about managing your environment to support health goals.
- It’s about emotional and spiritual health.
- And of course, it’s about changing behavior—one habit at a time.
My practice evolved
For years I had the desire to author a book and now I am (stay tuned!). As a registered dietitian nutritionist in practice since 1997 having counseled hundreds, if not thousands, of clients and patients, my practice evolved.
In my early days as a dietitian, I used a traditional approach of prescribing (goals, meal plans, etc.) but changed to a client-centered approach. I recognize people are their own experts—inherently having the answers. Combining my expertise as a dietitian with my certification as a Wellcoach® Certified Health Coach, I help facilitate change from within.
As my approach evolved and led to a more client-centered approach, my practice focused on working on many aspects other than just food and exercise. As my focus shifted I developed a program, the BE FREE Blueprint®: Naturally Increase Energy and Feel More Confident in 90 Days.
What BE FREE® means
The BE FREE Blueprint® consists of six principles— BE FREE
- Emotional health
Behavior: What’s the oft-quoted definition of insanity? “Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” What can you do differently?
Environment: “Genes load the gun, the environment pulls the trigger.” How can you manage your environment? Or, what needs to change in your environment?
Food: “The best diet is the one you don’t know you’re on.” -Brian Wansink, author of Mindless Eating. Keeping this quote in mind, what changes will you make?
Rest and/or relaxation: “Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” – Thomas Dekker. What changes will you make regarding rest, relaxation, and sleep?
Exercise: “Walk the dog twice a day, even if you don’t have one.” – Kenneth H. Cooper, MD, MPH. What can you do to move more?
Emotional and spiritual health: “Don’t forget to love yourself.” -Soren Kierkegaard. What are you doing to take care of yourself?
How does BE FREE® help?
In the Neily on Nutrition BE FREE Blueprint® coaching program, we focus on strategy, support, and accountability.
We look at your challenges, what’s stopping you, slowing you down or preventing you from having what you want. Together we determine what works best. We redesign, and we tweak—one step at a time.
If there is an unhealthy relationship with food, I will help. Without the need for you to diet, we will get it done.
Drawing upon your personal needs, we ensure you get on track for lasting success. We work as a team to get you on course.
You and I will identify many things: what behaviors need to change, how you can manage your environment, how best to fuel with food, how you can get adequate sleep/rest, how you best like to move your body—not what you think your body should do.
And most importantly, no matter how much all is in place, emotional health is critical. If someone is trying to deal with past demons, nothing helps long term—until those are addressed.
NOTE: I am a registered dietitian nutritionist and Wellcoach® Certified Health Coach. Some deep emotional issues are out of my area of expertise. If there are concerns, we will identify the need for a mental health professional. Therapy is terrific for confronting the past where coaching helps people look toward the future and move forward.
